Surface is excited to announce The Matter of Remaining, the SurfRes 2026 exhibition. This show marks the culmination of a four-week group residency in the gallery’s Project Space. The Matter of Remaining showcases a multitude of distinctive approaches while allowing ideas, materials and methods to find unexpected points of contact. Spanning moving image, performance, painting, installation, textiles and animation, the featured practices poke at the boundaries of the everyday, memory and ephemerality.

Surface proudly presents Making Life Here, a participatory photography exhibition featuring images and narratives created by children and young people living with sickle cell disease who have migrated to the United Kingdom. The exhibition brings together photography and personal captioning to explore how chronic illness, migration, identity and belonging intersect in everyday life.
