Surface is delighted to present You Knew What You Were Getting Yourself Into, a culmination of work by the 2026 graduating BA (Hons) Photography students at Nottingham Trent University. 

Bringing together the work of 46 final-year students, the exhibition reflects the breadth and experimental scope of contemporary photographic practice. The works explore photography not only as a means of representation, but as a critical tool for rethinking identity, memory, materiality, and lived experience.

Under the Rug: NTU Fine Art Collective Exhibition

Surface is pleased to welcome Under the Rug by second year Fine Art students from Nottingham Trent University.

Under the Rug is an exhibition produced by ten collectives, formed by second-year Fine Art students. Developed through an experimental residency at Surface, each group has explored their own way of working together, testing the possibilities of collaboration. As an exhibition, it explores themes and issues that not only affect our everyday lives but also globally, some of which are often overlooked or are swept “under the rug.”

Greenpeace Exhibition: Natural Discourse

This April, Surface is delighted to host the Greenpeace Exhibition Natural Discourse.

Art meets activism in this thought-provoking exhibition, which will bring together artists, performers and local residents to engage with the environmental challenges facing our planet today. Through creative expression and discussion, the event creates space for honest conversations about climate change and the systems affecting both people and nature. A varied programme of workshops and community activities is on offer throughout the week.

NTU Festival: Thought Forms

This February sees the return of the annual Surface collaboration with Nottingham Trent University with the 15th NTU Festival: Thought Forms.

Following the success of last year's festival, The Push and the Pull, this year's selected Fine Art students will use a critical and reflective approach to curate group exhibitions in response to the festival's theme Thought Forms. They will reflect on ideas such as the relationship between the real and the imaginary.

Surface welcomes Untergang, an exhibition by Nigel Addison and Damien McGinley, featuring a range of mixed media artworks. Hard edges of stone, architecture, man and machine merge into blended essences. Constantly changing associations are released as the observer is pulled into a process of continuous transformation, a melting pot of relationships with past, present, and future landscapes.
