Surface Gallery is pleased to announce X-CEPT, an exhibition that reflects on the experiences of seven recent graduates.
X-CEPT highlights issues of gender and sexuality from a traditionally underrepresented view of female and non-binary artists. From the performative photography of Maria Varnava’s alter-ego Blue Kid, to Georgina Hall’s queer feminist illustrations, and an obscure ‘anti-art’ installation drawn from Shannon McFerrin’s imagination, X-CEPT promises to be unapologetically eccentric.
The opening night features Elizabeth Gray and Mrs Art, a satirical performance paying homage to iconic pop culture moments such as Freddie Mercury’s video for I Want to Break Free.
Saturday, 10th August, 2pm
An opportunity to meet the artists who will be talking about their individual practices and experiences, and their crossing and redefining of the boundaries of identity and exclusion. These talks are informal and questions from the audience are welcome.
X-CEPT opens in the Project Space in conjunction with Re:Present: A Solo Exhibition by Neil Roberts in the Main Gallery. As always there will be a donations bar with ales from local brewery, Pheasantry.
Free Entry: Everyone Welcome
