Re:Present: A Solo Exhibition by Neil Roberts
10th – 24th August
Opening Night: Friday 9th August, 6-8pm
Surface Gallery is delighted to announce Re:Present, a solo exhibition by Neil Roberts.
Re:Present documents with confidence and striking simplicity our vivid and colourful contemporary world. Roberts is a figurative artist whose work captures the vibrant present through reflection and representation. In an image-saturated age of uploaded JPEG's, temporary social media posts, and transitory timeline feeds, Roberts bears witness, celebrates, and preserves today's moments for future generations. If anything can be art, then everything and everyone can - and should - be a subject. Roberts is inspired by the truth and beauty of the modern world. His art both celebrates and engages with youth/alternative culture.
Roberts paints a bright and shining truth. The subjects of his paintings are passing moments hardened into colour and shadow. In his work is a reality that exists not for the sake of entertainment or illusion, but to cut through the familiarity of the everyday. His work is more real than the real; exposed and unchanging we savour the images he presents. It is this quality, combined with his meticulous technique, that achieves an effect that is both traditional and yet distinctly of our time.
The opening night will feature a DJ set from Mothership – playing iconic, eclectic, euphoric dance music.
Re:Present: A Solo Exhibition by Neil Roberts opens in the Main Gallery in conjunction with X-Cept in the Project Space. As always there will be a donations bar with ales from local brewery, Pheasantry.
