Surface Gallery welcomes Are We Artists Now?, a collective of eleven, exhibiting for their final-year degree show.

Showcasing a range of diverse photographic styles and fascinating themes, Are We Artists Now? explores womanhood, intimacy, music subculture, the effects of human life on the environment, and society’s impact on the individual. These will be demonstrated in a variety of photographic forms, embracing fashion, landscape, and portraiture.

The work presented in Are We Artists Now? navigates facets of life that often go unnoticed. Kirsty Elizabeth Howland’s exploration of contemporary fashion trends, and Mollie Prime’s critique of stereotypical beauty standards highlight the impact of society upon the individual. Escapism, power, unfamiliarity, and temporality are themes explored in the works of Gabriella Coelho, Oliver Knowles, Megan Oakley, and Lauren Heap respectively, commenting on the relationship between human life and the environment. Jess Govinden’s portraitures of MCs records the people behind the sound, whilst Lois Cropper engages with the dynamic of intimate partner relationships, offering an insight into the capability of comfort, commitment and trust. Ria Measom’s minimalistic portraits of young women, Grace Kendall’s consideration of identity as a transgression of labels, and Bethany Jones-Grimshaw’s depiction of motherhood complete the work for Are We Artists Now?, an exhibition that offers original and diverse perspectives on the world around us.

Are We Artists Now? opens in the Main Gallery in conjunction with Ocular in the Project Space, both part of the same city-wide photography festival, GEN23. As always, there will be a donations bar with ales from local brewery Pheasantry.
