A quick chat with...Shelley Macdonald, EM13 success story

Shelley Madonald is a dear friend and (of course) lover of Surface Gallery...but along with that she is also one of our favourite sucsess stories from EM13 and a returning participate in EM14...

The East Midlands Graduate Project is intended to help graduate artists make the transition from an academic environment to a professional art environment, supporting Fine Art graduates from the Midlands' Universities. In anticipation of EM's return in October this year, we had a quick chat with the lovely Shelley about her experience...

Last year, Shelley took part in Surface Galleries fifth EMGP, where along with several other of the areas best grads', she was invited to inhabit Surface and create, explore and nurture new bodies of work, ending in a two week long exhibition.

For surface, this is exactly what we love – we love supporting and enriching artists careers in any way possible, and Shelley has proven a very successful offspring of our EM residency! Through a mixture of progress meetings, critiques, artist talks, development and workshops, Shelley and the other graduates were able to spread their wings into the creative world with confidence...and it shows - this year she has secured the resident artist position at the University of Nottingham, where's she's also doing a PhD .

This year (because we can't help ourselves) we're hosting EM14 – the sixth East Midlands Graduate residency at surface. We have been welcoming all recent Fine Art graduates from East Midlands universities, but also graduates now resident in the region.

You could have an experience as positive as Shelley's and make that all important step into the professional art world. ..for your last chance to apply, see http://www.surfacegallery.org/call-for-submissions/em14, submission deadline ends Monday 18th August.

The residency will come to a finish with the annual exhibition, so look out for it here at Surface at the end of October 2014.
