Street Art Festival 2017

Street Art Festival 2017
24th June - 15th July
Launch Party: Friday 23rd June, 18:00 - 22:00

This Summer at Surface Gallery, sees the return of the most anarchic, the most spectacular show in town: the Nottingham Street Art Festival. This hugely popular exhibition supports and promotes Nottingham’s vibrant alternative art scene by showcasing some of today’s best local talent.

As Leftlion advised: “check out the Street Art Festival. As with all disciplines, street art takes many different forms and it’s not all about spray painting ‘Harry woz ere’ on the wall. It can be anything from defaced images of models in magazines to bejazzled pictures of Miley Cyrus. The central exhibition spills out onto the alley walls at the back of the gallery, and the interior salon-hang gives you a right eyeful”.

If that wasn’t enough, the exhibition will again occupy our three-story building from top to bottom -- including our alternative artspace, Le Loovre. Clare Dunn, prize winner of last year’s Street Art Festival, is taking up residence in Le Loovre with a solo exhibition entitled Nature Calls. The exhibition is a response to trans exclusionist bathroom laws, and highlights the issues that transgender and nonbinary people face in their daily lives. Nature Calls celebrates the spectrum of sex and gender in nature.

The Street Art Festival launches with a DJ set from Plates Records. You’ll also be able to sample some nicely spiced cooking from Uncle Wayne’s Jerk Station. As always, there will be a donations bar with ales from the funkiest brewery in Nottingham: Springhead--probably the hippest hops in town.

Prizes will be awarded on the night by our panel of judges: Kid Acne, internationally acclaimed street artist, Geeta Pendse of BBC East Midlands, and The Finsbury Park Deltics, prize-winner from last year’s Street Art Festival. Rob Rennie will also be awarding a special prize from Hung Up, Nottingham’s only dedicated street art gallery.

This is a great opportunity to pick up some terrific art at affordable prices.
