This May, Surface Gallery welcomes Batch Collective, one of the many groups exhibiting in this year's citywide NTU Photo Festival, Emerge.
Batch features the work of eight BA (Hons) photography graduates, who demonstrate a variety of approaches and uses of the photographic medium. Bryant's project The Failed Painter examines individual aspect of the camera’s condition, while Clark's When The Time Is Right narrates a story of trust and relationship. Macleod investigates portraiture in film noir aesthetic and is juxtaposed with Judge's documentary portraiture of people at work. Messet focuses on providing a record of her relatives and the idea of belonging to a family. Wooton's fragmented photographs in All Cats Look Grey In The Dark celebrate women and their empowerment. Marvin's work takes us to investigate the landscape surrounding the Isle of Man Tourist Trophy outside of the event taking place.
This diverse selection of themes and perspectives encourage a fresh dialogue. Posing new questions around photography it challenges perceptions and allows new conversations to take place. It is also a great opportunity to meet the exhibiting artists.
Batch will open in the Project Space in conjunction with Hexad in the Main Gallery. The Opening Night will be held on Monday 23rd May, 68pm. As always there will be a donations bar with ales from local brewery, Springhead.
