This Summer, Surface Gallery will throw open the doors for the Street Art Festival. This hugely popular exhibition supports and promotes Nottingham’s vibrant alternative art scene by showcasing some of today’s best local talent. We are also accepting work from all around the world. In keeping with the spirit of the occasion, Surface Gallery welcomes submissions from established and emerging artists working in a variety of disciplines, making it a truly inclusive and eclectic affair.
“Some of the exhibitors are certainly no respectors of traditional artistic media”, the Nottingham Post noted of last year’s Street Art Open. “Some artists use skateboards, old wooden doors, leather jackets, handbags and a car bonnet as their canvas, indeed just about anything that would look out of place in a formal art gallery. Surface Gallery has obviously found the right formula, since the show is already proving to be one of the biggest crowd-pullers of the year”.
This year’s Street Art Festival will launch with a DJ set from Stiff Kittens, and a dance session from NuProjeks Collective Collaboration, who will be modelling some of the very latest gear from Mimm. The launch will also feature live painting, and a charity auction. Dr Martens have donated five items to be customised by local street artists, which will be auctioned to raise money for a local community youth group, the SEND Project. This also your chance to sample the culinary delights of Uncle Wayne’s Jerk Station, as well as the fabulous ales provided by our brewery sponsor, Springhead—probably the hippest hops in town.
Prizes will be awarded on the night by our panel of judges: Inkie, internationally acclaimed street artist, Kathy McArdle, from the Creative Quarter, and Wayne Fallon, winner of last year’s Street Art Open.
This is a great opportunity to pick up some terrific art at affordable prices. And remember there’s still time to submit work for this year’s Street Art Festival. Visit our website at www.surfacegallery.org for details. But hurry! Deadline for submissions is 18:00 Friday 12th June.
In conjunction with the exhibition, there will be an event held across the street from Surface Gallery at Sneinton Market on Saturday 4th July. The event will feature DJs from I’m Not From London and Gallery Sounds, and breakdancing from the QMX Street Team. There will also be skateboarding and live painting by local street artists, including the kids from the SEND Project.
On the 11th of July, you are all invited to come down to the gallery and let your artistic side take over; chill around our BBQ with a few beers, meet the artists of Street Art Festival, chat with like minded people and be part of our sketching session!
