Following the successful Document 2010 exhibition at The Host Gallery, Shoreditch London organisers War on Want and Bond & Coyne bring the Document 2010 photography award to Surface Gallery, Nottingham.
The competition was launched by War on Want and Bond & Coyne in the summer of 2009 to scour the globe for the next generation of documentary photography undergraduate talent. Applicants were asked to look at the issue of Crisis and change – The human face of the Economic Meltdown, a timely and highly pertinent topic.
After filtering through the national and international entries from students across the world the finalists were chosen by a panel of judges consisting of highly respected industry professionals: Greg Whitmore (Picture editor the Observer), Stephan Ledger (Lomas, Art buyer at Mother and Photographer) and Lauren Heinz (Editor of Foto8 Magazine).
At the Launch Night the international winner, Victor Yuliev from St. Petersburg Journalists’ Union studying Photojournalism was announced alongside the overall winner Gareth Kingdon from the University of Wales Newport, whose work was featured in a double spread centre fold of the Guardian on the 11 January 2010.
The private viewing and award announcement in London was oversubscribed, with many industry professionals attending the event: ‘‘we were really extremely impressed by the outstanding high quality and standard of work from the applicants’’ Stefanie Pfeil, War on Want.
