Surface Gallery

Postcard Show 2008

December 6th to December 20th 2008

Anyone can make art. Anyone can buy art.

The Postcard Show is one of Surface Gallery’s most exciting and eclectic exhibitions. Each year sees a new set of volunteers rise to the challenge of organising and displaying a massive body of new work from all over the UK and beyond. Previous years have seen over 300 entrants submitting over 1,000 postcards, some even from as far away as Japan.

The brief is both open and restrictive, encouraging entrants to produce original artworks within a prescribed format: a standard 4”x6” postcard. Artists working across a variety of media have contributed everything from painting and drawing to photography, book-making, mosaic, sculpture, textile and even sound. The finest entries stretch these parameters and surprise the onlooker with the limitless scope found within such a seemingly limiting format.

Every entry received is exhibited and available to buy for only £20.

We welcome work from all artists, no matter the background, experience, age or discipline. In this, our new gallery space, Surface Gallery will continue to support emerging local and international artists as an entirely volunteer-run, not-for-profit organisation.

So welcome to the first exhibition at the revamped Surface Gallery: The Postcard Show 2008…
