Surface Gallery

Orchard Exhibition

December 9th to December 22nd 2011

Neville Gabie was selected to create a programme of events and a piece of art in the public realm for Sneinton Market’s relaunch. His practice has developed over a sustained period of involvement not just with the site, but also with other creative professionals in Nottingham, making this exhibition the result of intensive collaboration. This exhibition features artists who have been invited to respond to the Orchard project and wider themes of sustainable food in an urban context.  It features a series of new documentary photographs by Oliver Dalby; a series of curated meals and installations Rebecca Beinart; a mobile apple press by Mathew Trivett and a new volume of writings Wayne Burrows.

Visit the project website for a full programme of talks, workshops and demonstrations which will be taking place at Surface Gallery for Orchard.

ABOUT ORCHARD

Orchard, by Neville Gabie is a major new commission for Nottingham’s recently revamped Sneinton Market. The award-winning artist has planted a series of apple trees in the new square, intended for communal use and enjoyment. The artist has also donated apple trees of 100 different varieties, through his Apple Tree Adoption network to local residents, schools and community organisations of Sneinton and St Ann’s in order to create a diverse urban orchard spanning the east side of the city.

Orchard has been commissioned by Nottingham City Council to mark the launch of the new square, designed by Patel Taylor architects. The ground-breaking initiative has been managed by longstanding commissioners of art in the public realm, Contemporary Art Society with the assistance of Nottingham based curator, Jennie Syson.

Over the launch weekend, Neville Gabie has invited Nottingham based artists Rebecca Beinart, Mathew Trivett and Oliver Dalby alongside writer and poet Wayne Burrows to join him in creating a varied programme of events to celebrate the planting of the apple trees. This programme comprises an exhibition at Surface Gallery; a symposium at Nottingham Contemporary; the launch of the new Sneinton Market itself; and a feast at Stonebridge City Farm.  The opening programme also includes projections from Trampoline and Broadway.

Orchard is both an artwork in itself and programme of events. The apple trees planted for Orchard represent Nottingham City Council’s ongoing commitment to the production of urban food linked to community engagement in the city. This artwork is unique and site specific and has been especially designed to link one of the oldest fruit and veg markets in the country to the wider debate of sustainable food in a city centre context. Orchard’s programme has been devised with the help and support of Nottingham based organisations concerned with this need.
