Open Show 2008
August 11th to August 29th 2008
An international selection of works from artists working in a variety of media.
Private View
12th August 6-8pm
Surface Gallery is pleased to announce Open Show 2008 curated from an international selection of artists, submitting their work from as far abroad as Canada and Japan. From the submissions 24 artists will exhibit works in a range of media from traditional oil paintings to film, photography, sculpture and installations.
Surface Gallery hopes everyone will find something of interest and engagement from the innovative, quirky or just plain good artworks within the exhibition. Some examples of the artists involved include Junko Sano’s films, exploring the layers of obligation and expectation within Japanese society and how an artist can find ways of expression and difference.
Margot Cormier Splane’s artwork can be described as ‘Reality with a Twist’, quirky vignettes with anthropomorphised animals mining a sense of pathos between the situation and the incongruity of the animals involved. Rebecca Griffiths’ ‘Internal Topology’ explores the notion of balance and disjunction through the marriage of cast spleens and other organic fragments, with their placement and installation amongst otherworldly computation inspired topological designs.
Private View is on 12th August 6-8pm where you can come and meet some of the artists and have a glass of wine. Or come in at anytime during the exhibition opening hours.
Featured Artists include: Alwyn Lambert, Hannah Smith, Rebecca Griffiths, Alison Sharkey, Elisabeth Hoyle, Choterina Freer, Paula Reid, Becky Hunt, Margot Splane, Jonathan Williams, Evy Jokhova, Tom Lovelace, Sarah Brown, Alex Pearl, Derek Carruthers, Sean Branaghan, Junko Sano, Katharine Wojcik, Hayley Lock, Esther Jervis, Carly Seller, Les Bell, Jo Berry, Bruce Ingram.
