Kyle Hands - Series No. 2
March 26th to April 2nd 2011
Surface Gallery is pleased to announce the first solo exhibition of work by Kyle Hands. Having previously exhibited as part of our e.m. 10 Continua show, Kyle returns with the latest instalment of his experimental painting. He creates work free from external influence or theme, developing a self-reflective art which draws attention to the process of creating, and to the uniqueness of the final form. Inherent in this practice is a sense of freedom, as without boundaries imposed by interpretive association, the potential for further experimentation is limitless.

Kyle Hands applies white household gloss paint to MDF, varying the drying times for each piece. This allows the paint to form an unset “skin” before he cuts away and manipulates the surface, leaving the viewer with the unique paintings presented in this exhibition. Set parameters such as shape, size, depth, and the dimensions of the central recess inform the outcome of the work. The sense of experimentation in each piece lends an element of surprise to both artist and viewer. Rather than painting with an expected or desired outcome, Kyles’ method provides unique and inimitable results every time.
For Series No. 2 Kyle has taken three of the pieces featured in e.m. 10 Continua, and added a further 11 pieces, indulging a desire for “ongoing experimentation with the material and the process”. The presentation of works past, alongside the most recent, allows for a chronological comparison of the various results and continuing evolution of his practice. Like a glossy fractal, each new result spawns the infinite possibility for more along the same vein.
Kyle Hands graduated from the Nottingham Trent University with a BA (Hons) in Fine Art. He lives and works in Nottingham, and has shown work as part of e.m. 10 Continua (2010) and the Wirksworth Art Festival (2010).
