Site&Situ : Frank Kent
August 13th to August 20th 2011
Since relocating to a four-storey building in Sneinton in 2008, Surface has re-established
itself as a multi-layered platform for emerging artists, offering exhibitions, studios and
most recently, residencies. Surface selected Nottingham-based young artist Frank Kent
for the first solo Artist Residency in the Project Space, entitled Site&Situ, to encourage
the playful and performative way he creates paintings in response to a specific site.
Frank arrived at painting via graffing and carpentry, this energetic and physical way of
working has impacted on the way he paints, producing a unique mode of painting that
has a direct relationship to the specific site he and the work are situated in. His works
continually shift location and appearance, being adapted and edited and celebrating the
scratches and scuffs that happen along the way as an important part of their unfolding
narrative.
A record deck, speakers and stacks of records sit centre stage in his residency space; the
sounds, colours, shapes, movement and physicality of changing records appear to inform
the work, in the square dimensions of a canvas, the physical stacking of paintings, the
reappearing circles in the work or the lines, flecks and dots of paint that dance fluidly
through the space.
Throughout Frank’s 3-month artist residency his site-responsive paintings have
developed a distinctive dialogue with the Project Space; the site informs and influences
some works whereas others perform the reverse through their physical presence and
interruption in the space.
Surface present a week-long exhibition of Frank Kent’s Site&Situ Artist Residency in the
Project Space, which acts as a physical document to what has been a live, thoughtful and
occasionally mischievous residency.
Exhibition Dates: Saturday 13th – Saturday 20th August 2011
Opening Times: Monday – Saturday, 11am – 5pm
Residency Closing Party: Saturday 20th August, 6pm – 9pm.
