Baptism of Hailstones

A series of Shamanic paintings by Nazir Tanbouli

June 18th to June 24th 2009

A collection of wall-paintings using story and myth as a visual and intellectual frame work to explore Western and Mediterranean heritage, embracing the ancient art, craft and history of his native Egypt.

Nazir Tanbouli presents his exhibition “Baptism of Hailstones” through a collection of wall-paintings using story and myth as a visual and intellectual frame within which to explore Western and Mediterranean heritage, embracing the ancient art, craft and history of his native Egypt.

Storytelling functions for Nazir as necessary for human communication and expression as found in a variety of cultural forms including religious tales, mythology, fairy and folk tales, urban myth, recorded history, news and advertisements. All of these evoke and reveal the story of the human condition as central to Nazir’s artwork, specifically focusing on the circumstance of his generation. Nazir typically favors figurative, narrative and expressive techniques through the mediums of painting, drawing, mural and printmaking in a contemporary context.

Through acute self-awareness Nazir fuses his diverse heritage with his traditional artistic academic background whilst simultaneously seeking new places, people and ideas to move his art into a contemporary visual setting. Nazir combines the various parts of his Egyptian heritage, and projects an awareness of his Mediterranean roots whilst seeking active interest in the history, landscape, climate and environment of his eclectic surroundings.
