Must Try Harder - The Volunteers’ Show

January 10th to January 25th 2008

{title}

Each year the volunteers at Surface Gallery are given the chance to exhibit a selection of their work within the gallery.

The work on show is as diverse, eclectic and broad ranging as the backgrounds from which the volunteers come - ranging from Illustration and Graphic Design to Fine Art, Photography and Cultural Studies.The media chosen by the artists looks set include photography, performance, installation, video and more.

The title represents a maxim often uttered by those who work in this field - encapsulating both frustrations and positive intentions of those trying to make their own way within the arts; a knowing criticism bound with the positivity of progressive self-improvement.
Taken as a kind of new-years resolution for the team at the gallery it also contains the promise of bigger and better things to come in year ahead.

Rules of the Game - Double Take

May 15th to May 19th 2007

{title}

The double-take phenomenon is investigated in this exhibition and it is this shared motivation rather than a unifying aesthetic that ties these artists together. All the works in their own way challenge one’s perception, demanding the viewer to reconsider that which is familiar and often overlooked.

Humorous, deceitful, dreamlike or enhancing the formal qualities of common objects, the works in this exhibition call upon our attention to the subconscious ‘rules’ of the order of things: spaces, materials and situations are manipulated and propose to look afresh at our environment and to re-imagine it.

Rules of the Game - Hybrids

May 8th to May 12th 2007

{title}

The modern world is made up of processes which order, delineate and assign subjectivities to space.  It is these rules, the making of purified spaces and regulatory systems, which the artists in Hybrid aim to subvert.  The result is an amalgamation of some rather unlikely couplings and strange conflations, which defy customary regimes of classification.
