Mr. Palomar tries to explain and define his own existence by trying to find order and reason in the complex and chaotic world around him, thus highlighting the mind’s need to break the natural world up into neat categories, so enabling us to understand how it is all put together.

This exhibition is based on ideas of observation and perception, and brings together the work of Kate Brigden, Dylan Shipton and Pippa Gatty.

Must Try Harder - The Volunteers’ Show

January 10th to January 25th 2008

{title}

Each year the volunteers at Surface Gallery are given the chance to exhibit a selection of their work within the gallery.

The work on show is as diverse, eclectic and broad ranging as the backgrounds from which the volunteers come - ranging from Illustration and Graphic Design to Fine Art, Photography and Cultural Studies.The media chosen by the artists looks set include photography, performance, installation, video and more.

The title represents a maxim often uttered by those who work in this field - encapsulating both frustrations and positive intentions of those trying to make their own way within the arts; a knowing criticism bound with the positivity of progressive self-improvement.
Taken as a kind of new-years resolution for the team at the gallery it also contains the promise of bigger and better things to come in year ahead.
