The final installment in our series of artist features from our Painted Surface exhibition is Julian Rowe. He is an experienced artist from Kent who gained his MA in Fine Art in 2010. We chose Julian for our exhibition for his different choice in surface and the historical references, yet its modern take with use of projection.
Check out his artist statement here:
My work arises from a fascination with the past, and a conviction that social and cultural history offers a rich field of enquiry for contemporary practice. History is an abundant source of half buried and forgotten objects, events and narratives, to be uncovered and reclaimed for the ideas that drive my work. This fascination with the past, however, is not an exercise in retrospection or nostalgia, but rather a means through which to engage critically with the present. It is a vantage point from which that engagement can contribute a particular depth and perspective to contemporary cultural discourses.
