So as you may know, a few months ago we agreed to be a Prize Giver for the very long-running Castle Open at Nottingham Castle. This week we were kindly invited to have a look around the Exhibition and pick our winner, who will win a 3 week residency and a 2 week exhibition here at Surface...
We've been excited about this collaboration for a while now, and as our Exhibitions Coordinator Jez Kirby said, "it's an opportunity to get involved with something quite prestigious with a long history in Nottingham, and we are now making inroads into a lot of different areas that perhaps Surface hasn’t explored before and that will pay deviance, make us stronger, more visible, more attractive to exhibit at".
The Castle Open has been running for over 100 years, and over (not quite that many years) we've enjoyed seeing what amazing talent the midlands has to offer. This year was no exception...
2015's Open is an inspiring, eclectic mixture of styles, colours, mediums, stories, contexts, all rolled into one really well-curated show. Of course we won't be revealing our winner until the Castle's Prize Giving Party & Closing Ceremony on the 17th, but in case you can't wait until then, we've added some of the artists we've been talking about most:
Firstly is Jackie Berridge; her expressive paintings showcase her talent in line, form, gestures and imagination through the most gorgeous colour pallets of utopian landscapes.
Another interesting artist in the show is Craig Fisher, who works with 'feminine' materials and patterns to create sculptures replicating 'devices' of violence, disaster, and on some levels, masculinity.
The Exhibition is open until 18th, so check it out before it ends! See if you can guess our winner from the 32 Artists!
Read more about their exhibition over on their website.
